We can be there when they need us.

As the winter months close in we’re all continuing to feel the impact of the pandemic. Increased food and fuel costs, and transport problems resulting in less on the shelves this winter. While our Merchant Navy seafarers work tirelessly to keep our nation stocked not just during winter time but all year round, many struggle to keep the lights on, feed their families, or should the worst happen, provide for their loved ones.

This was the case for Helen and her family after the sudden loss of her ex-partner and father to her three children, Charlie, who sadly passed away after suffering a heart attack while working at sea. Charlie was paying child maintenance when he died. He had no life insurance, no savings or Will in place. The tragic and unexpected loss left Helen suddenly struggling to make ends meet.

'I didn’t know what to do, we were struggling almost right away. It was the beginning of the school year and the children needed
new uniforms.'

Helen provided for her children with income from her part time job, tax credits and child benefits. She rented her home and received a small housing benefit but there was a previous benefit overpayment which she was trying to repay each month. It was during this difficult time that Helen contacted SAIL, a charity which provides advice and support to working and retired seafarers and their families.

SAIL helped Helen submit a grant application to the Seafarers Hospital Society, who awarded her a lifeline grant of a month’s rent. Her caseworker then helped Helen apply for ongoing support from the Sailor’s Children’s Society who support the children of seafarers in financial hardship.

The Merchant Navy Fund provides grants to organisations like SAIL, the Sailor’s Children’s Society and many more who help seafarers and their families in times of crisis, like Helen who struggled without this vital network of support.

Seafarers are our lifeline. We are committed to improving the lives of Merchant Navy seafarers, active and retired. This winter, you can make a life-changing difference to seafarers and their families who have fallen on hard times.

Will you be there to support seafarers and their families when they need us?

  • £30 can cover the cost of food hampers for six families, containing essential items such as bread, tinned food, pasta, biscuits, and a little chocolate.
  • £60 can provide winter parcels for half a dozen elderly, isolated and vulnerable seafarers who are home alone. Parcels include woollen hat, gloves and scarf, shower gel, shampoo, deodorant, razor, shaving foam, flannel, toothbrush, toothpaste, tissues, and more.
  • £120 could fund a clothing grant for two children twice a year. The first to provide a new school uniform in September, the second clothing grant is given to provide a warm winter coat and sturdy shoes.

Your donation will help us give UK Merchant Navy seafarers and their families somewhere to turn for support at time of crisis. Thank you.
