Merchant Navy Fund's Winter Appeal
Raised so far
Please show your support for those struggling in the Merchant Navy community this winter. This winter season, we are asking you to join us in honouring our brave seafarers, many of whom were away from their loved ones during Christmas, whilst serving our needs at sea. For other Merchant Navy families, this holiday season may be a time when money worries mean that paying the bills takes priority over presents. There will also be those who are struggling with long-term illness, injury, or are older and alone after a career serving at sea. Worryingly, this year has seen a steep rise in the number of Merchant Navy families falling into food poverty, fuel debt and even facing homelessness. Make a donation today to ensure our merchant seafarers receive the assistance they need to minimise their hardship. Your charitable donation will help support more people like Joan*, who lives on one of Scotland’s remotest islands. When Joan’s boiler stopped working towards the end of last year, she turned to one of the maritime charities we fund for help. With temperatures dropping, the absence of hot water and heating posed a severe threat to an older person like Joan. Her late husband served in the Merchant Navy for many years, so when she asked, our delivery partner was able to help her in her hour of need by using funds from the Merchant Navy Fund to pay for a new boiler. Joan’s safety and well-being were catered for during a difficult time. Your kindness and generosity this winter will make vital services like this possible – directly supporting Merchant Navy families in urgent need. The cost-of-living crisis has continued to hit seafarers and their families in need across the country this year. More and more people have been dragged into hardship by rising inflation and interest rates, with many vulnerable seafarers now experiencing in-work poverty. Fortunately, thanks to your donations, we have been able to provide emergency hardship grants to support individuals like Joan who are struggling to make ends meet. Every year, the Merchant Navy Fund provides essential grants to a network of maritime welfare charities that are a lifeline for hundreds of UK Merchant Navy seafarers and their families. In addition to critical support during challenging times, the programmes we fund provide assistance with elderly care, mental health support to fight loneliness and depression, offer respite care for vulnerable retired seafarers and their carers, as well as financial support following an accident or an illness, and much more. Whatever gift you can make today will be used wherever the need is greatest to support current and retired UK merchant seafarers and their families in crisis this holiday season… and all year round. *Name has been changed to protect privacy Grants made possible by our kind supporters: Thanks to our loyal supporters, we have been able to award many thousands of pounds in grants to charities which directly support working and retired UK Merchant Navy seafarers in need and their families. Here are just a few examples of grants awarded: A £15,000 grant was awarded to The Shipwrecked Fishermen and Mariners’ Royal Benevolent Society for the provision of a top-up fund to support emergency grants to UK Merchant Navy seafarers and their dependents in real poverty, but who do not fit within the charity’s eligibility criteria of 10 years of service at sea. A £25,000 grant was awarded to Sailors’ Children’s Society to support children and young people from Merchant Navy families on low incomes, to help with essentials such as school uniforms, winter clothes, educational equipment and more. A £40,000 grant was awarded to Queen Victoria Seamen’s Rest to help fund their hostel accommodation and welfare support for active and retired seafarers and their dependants
