Make a life-changing difference to a family in need

Ten years ago, the Merchant Navy Fund was created to help UK Merchant Navy seafarers and their families in need of support. The types of support have evolved over the past ten years in response to the need. This year, the need is critical.

We are incredibly proud of what we have been able to achieve so far, but now is not the time to slow down. We are working alongside our delivery partners to ensure informational, emotional, and practical support, is made available to Merchant Navy seafarers and their families who need it, when it is needed most.

The recent P&O Ferries crisis, where 800 workers were sacked on a pre-recorded video call without any notice only to be replaced with cheaper agency staff, is a prime example of the need. No one saw it coming. When Merchant Navy seafarers and their families are suddenly thrust into similar desperate circumstances, we are there to offer a helping hand by funding the services needed to help people get back on their feet.

Some of those needs include providing emotional support for working Merchant Navy seafarers at home or at sea, helping retired seafarers or families who have fallen on hard times to clear their debts, or giving others back their dignity by providing the means to live a more independent and fulfilling life.

Over the past ten years, the Merchant Navy Fund has distributed more than £720,000 in grants to organisations focussed on improving the lives and meeting the needs of Merchant Navy seafarers and their families.

But we need your help.

With the headlines we’ve seen over the past few months, it seems like spring was always going to be a difficult time. But in the months ahead, we can make a life-changing difference to the Merchant Navy seafarers who are struggling to work and look after their families. That’s why we are urgently appealing for your support.

Established in 2012, the Merchant Navy Fund helps to ensure the right services are there for Merchant Navy seafarers and their families. With your help we can get the funds to where they are urgently needed and ensure that those in desperation always have someone to turn to.
